If you grew up in the 80s you are definitely going to remember the green witch named Grotbags. She starred in Emu’s World and then later on in Emu’s All Live Pink Windmill Show. Each week we watched as Grotbags tried to steal Hull’s arm-length puppet Emu. Her plan was to get the puppet and use its magical powers to control of tthe ‘brats’ in the world.
The actress who played Grotbags in 1981 was Carole Lee Scott and was introduced to kids TV at the time. The show was replaced in 1984 with Emu’s All Live Windmill Show which was very similar to the original show.
Do you remember Hull’s catchphrase: “There’s somebody at the door, there’s somebody at the door?” We heard this every time someone rang the sneezing doorbell. Grotbags did get her own show in 1991 but she wasn’t the same without Emu.
Now Carol Lee-Scott, 73, lives a quiet life in Spaxton near Bridgwater. The Adventure Park near Wells asked her to fill a vacancy for an attraction living as a witch like she had in the past.
Everyone agrees she would have been great for the role but she declined saying:
I would love to go for the job but I’m a bit knackered now – the old cogs aren’t as well oiled anymore! Whoever wins the job needs to be an extrovert who loves people and enjoys talking to children nastily – and most of all they must do it for the love of the job and not the money. But above all they must be a woman. Witches are worth their weight in gold so the wage sounds about right – it’s a very demanding job!
